PicoKami and the Yarn Harlot

The Yarn Harlot event yesterday gave me the extra push to finish up my PicoKami Friday night. Here’s a modeled shot with the salamander statue (and a pigeon) in the library courtyard.

It’s a ChicKami that I heavily modified with picot edges and a shorter back (bound off at the same time as the underarm stitches), in addition to changes for size and fit. Unfortunately I’ve misplaced my sheet of paper with all my notes on what I did – I’m hoping I find it somewhere and didn’t lose it forever at Stitch ‘n Bitch.

The Yarn Harlot’s talk was as entertaining as expected, and it was also more inspiring than expected. When I saw her on the At Knit’s End tour, she talked a lot about knitting, which was great. But on this tour, the focus was on knitters, which was even better. I think a big part of it is how much my life has changed since her first book came out. At that time, I had just started going to Stitch ‘n Bitch and befriending local knitters. Over two years later, when she asked how many of us have more friends because of knitting, I had to laugh a little because knitters not only make up a large portion of my friends but they also form a very solid core – they’re the friends I spend the most time with and the friends I can rely on the most.

Enough sappiness – back to the knitting! My proof of attendance is a blurry toe-up monkey with a blurry Stephanie.

I’m sure you’ll find plenty of better shots across LA-knitblogland of both Stephanie (she’s not so blurry in real life) and the crowd. There were so many people, and there would’ve been so many more if the venue had been bigger! It was also a bit of a reunion with knitting friends from the other side of town. Sorry there wasn’t more hanging out – auditorium seating made it tough, and we had to scoot out quickly right after the talk to find food.

PicoKami turned out beautifully. It’s funny to look at everyone’s pictures of the Harlot talk and see how different it is from when we went to go see her in San Diego…..I’m trying to explain to the non-knitter just how famous she is :)

Ooh, PicoKami! I couldn’t tell the mods from the other end of the row of seats, but I could tell it was a Kami. Great fun and great seeing you!

So I have to say, I am not sure that knitting has really changed my life. I have yet to become a regular stich and bitcher, it is more that I taught a couple of friends to knit, they got way, way better than me, and it is something that keeps us in touch. And, I suppose, it leads to me feeling somewhat more connected to you. I’ll let you know what I think of hearing her here.

Oh, yeah! In my case, some dark clouds came into my life and somehow I found knitting in the middle of them – a furry lining, I guess.

Sorry we didn’t have a chance to chat – so much excitement, and our group somehow wound up at the tail end of the signing queue. Your Picokami looks great! Hope to see you again soon – are you planning to make Crazy Aunt Purl’s signing?
